Jelly Roll Sampler

A Friday Finish!

(let me know if this font color is too hard to read!)

Back in January/ February I went to a quilt store after just being introduced to the world of quilting (read more here). I had just been introduced to the Moda Bake Shop website, so I kind of knew what charm squares, layer cakes, etc. were. While there, I picked up a Jelly Roll. I had no idea what to use it for. It was Objects of Desire by Sandy Gervais. I picked it because I knew that Sandy had at one time lived/ grew up in the town that I now live in (good reason, right?). I had no idea what the fabric looked like until I unrolled it a couple months later.

I found this Jelly Roll Sampler Quilt Along going on in blog world. I decided to play catch up, and I did a few squares.

Well, then July came and my sewing room (basement) became the guest suite as I had many friends and relatives visiting for the month at different times, including a stay from my parents that went from a 4 day visit to a 8 day visit due to a trip to the ER for my dad.

Finally I finished the blocks and had to decide how to put them together. I read somewhere that if you lay them out and squint or take a picture and look at it, it helps to see things more clearly. I think it worked....

Well last night I finished the top. Before I put on the border I tried to take some fancy sunlight through the window pictures.... it didn't work out to well (maybe I should look for a photography class).

Anyway, I decided to gift the quilt this Christmas (I won't mention the name of the recipient, just in case).... The race was on to finish it. Last night I finished up the borders. I think it is interesting how in different steps of the process the outlook of the project keeps changing. I went from loving the squares to hating the top, and now with the borders on I am loving it all over again.

I definitely learned a lot from this project. I really learned that I am allowed to not follow directions if I don't want to, so I can make something my own. But I also learned to be prepared for major disastrous mistakes if I decide to go my own way.

Now I need to decide on how to quilt it. My sewing machine only likes straight lines....

I will be linking up to: & HERE.

  8. What a beautiful quilt! I am going to have to go to that link that you shared for the Jelly Roll quilt a long. I picked my first one up a month or so ago and I'm not sure what to do with it yet. I pretty new to quilting and I also love the Moda Bake Shop. That's where the few quilts that I have made so far came from. You pictures of you quilt top at the window are so beautiful. It looks like stained glass! Thanks for sharing! :-)
